What Will Aberdeen City Centre Actually Look Like?
Union Street, the Market and Castlegate are pieces of a much bigger regeneration plan

For anyone walking through Aberdeen city centre, talk of regeneration has been impossible to miss.

Construction, diversions, vacant premises and ambitious plans have all become part of the conversation.

But the bigger question is what Aberdeen city centre is intended to become when the work is complete.

The answer goes beyond any single project.

Union Street Central, the new Aberdeen Market and improvements around Castlegate form parts of the wider City Centre and Beach Masterplan.

The Union Street work is intended to create better conditions for pedestrians while maintaining access for public transport and services.

The new Market is planned as a food, drink and entertainment destination, with a pedestrian connection between Union Street and the bus and railway stations.

Castlegate is also being reshaped as an important civic space and part of the route towards the beach.

Put together, the strategy is about creating connections rather than simply improving individual streets.

Of course, attractive paving and new buildings alone cannot regenerate a city centre.

People need reasons to come and reasons to stay.

That means shops, independent businesses, cafés, restaurants, entertainment, events, homes and welcoming public spaces.

The real test will be whether the finished centre feels busier, easier to use and more relevant to the people who live here.

What would make you visit Aberdeen city centre more often?
